Welcome to Youth Orchestras of Essex County

We Are Three Orchestras

More than 100 musicians from a dozen towns, led by five outstanding conductors who make beautiful classical music on Mondays during the school year. We play four concerts to a combined audience of about 700 people in the spring and fall. We have socials three times a year, and a potluck dessert after our concerts. Our recordings are online and we have fun! Join us!

Mission Statement

To provide a diverse group of musically talented young people the opportunity to participate in an affordable, high-level orchestral experience and cultivate a lifelong love of music.

Join Us

Our orchestras offer a musical opportunity for ages 7 to 18, generally second grade through high school.

Placement in the three orchestras is based on an audition. With conductor approval, some musicians will play with the higher-level orchestra, particularly if they have been with us for a long time and have the musical ability and maturity for more intense rehearsals.

In some instances, a musician new to us will benefit from a semester with a less advanced level before moving to another orchestra. Some advanced players in the youngest orchestra may be offered an opportunity to play one piece with the advanced orchestra. Conductors make all placement in a manner they feel best benefits the individual musician and the orchestra as a whole.

Youth Musicians – Come Play in an orchestra this summer, read through new literature and practice your sight-reading skills — and have fun.

One of the most challenging skills for any musician is to master sight-reading of orchestral scores, especially when playing with other instruments. With this in mind, Youth Orchestras of Essex County (YOEC) decided to introduce a new summer program that will help youth musicians work on their sight-reading skills and as an additional bonus introduce new literature.

The sessions will be conducted by Lou Kosma, Kimberly Syvertsen and Max Morden throughout the summer. Each conductor has worked extensively with youth orchestras and bring a world of orchestral experience with them. They will provide sight-reading tips, a variety of orchestral literature at varying levels and an enjoyable musical experience.

The read-through sessions are open to all youth musicians – no audition required. Monday sessions will focus on advanced orchestral music (original scores, no arrangements) geared towards high school level. Wednesday sessions will focus on intermediate orchestral music geared towards middle school; however, elementary school musicians are welcome to join in.

Cost is $20.00 per youth musician per session. If a family of 3 or more attend, the cost is $50.00 for the family.   Refreshments will be served. Registration and payment can be made on the Registrations and Payments page.

Any questions can be directed to Debra A. Courtright, Executive Director, at admin@yoec.org or 973-618-9288.

This will be a music-filled, fun learning experience for everyone.

Musicians - bring your brothers, sisters, friends and parents to play along beside you!
