Overture Ensemble

Overture Ensemble (OVST) – 2014-2015 will meet on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

All auditions include sight-reading. All returning musicians must use a new solo and a more advanced series of scales, and demonstrate progress from the previous year at the audition.

Audition requirements for Strings

Open to grades 2 and up

Violin: Scales & Arpeggios A Major
D Major (1 octave)
G Major (2 octaves)
Bowings Separate – Legato quarter notes, mm=60-69)
Repertoire
Violin I A piece on the level of Suzuki book 3 or higher
Violin II A piece on the level of Suzuki book 2
Violin III A piece on the level of Suzuki book 1
Viola: Scales & Arpeggios G Major
D Major (1 octave)
C Major (2 octaves)

Repertoire A piece on the level of Suzuki book 1

Audition Requirements for Winds and Brass

Open to students in grades 4 & up

Audition Requirements
1. A one-octave major scale of choice that best demonstrates your ability is suitable for most wind and brass players.
Flute and clarinet applicants only: a two-octave scale of choice that best demonstrates your ability
2. A one-octave chromatic scale that best demonstrates your ability
3. Readiness to play in concert pitch keys of F, C, G and D major (actual key varies by transposing instrument)
4. A brief solo which best demonstrates your ability
Recommended Playing Ranges (by written note, not concert pitch)
Flute: C4-F5
Oboe: C4-C6
Clarinet: E3-Bb5
Trumpet: Bb3-F5
French Horn: F3-D5
Trombone: Ab2-F4
Tuba: Bb1-C3
Note: Ability to transpose is not required.
